Euthan Simpson

3 03 2010

After much curiosity and a desire to satisfy it, I found information about two of the ships my grandfather Euthan Ambrose Simpson served.
The first was the USS Wasp (CV-7). Info can be read about it here. It was torpedoed and sunk September 15, 1942.

Surviving the attack, he was immediately transferred to the USS Hornet (CV-8). It can be read about here. My grandfather fought on the ship in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands. This ship was attacked on October 26, 1942 and sunk the next day.

I can’t imagine what he went through. The fire on board the Kennedy was scary, but it is difficult to imagine surviving two attacks, much less one, and staying in the Navy afterward. He was a very quiet man, and now I understand why.

If you happen to have any information about these ships please post in the comments or contact me.

Riots at the Temple Mount

28 02 2010

The JTA published this story about Palestinian youth locking themselves in the Al-Aksa Mosque and throwing stones at police and non-Muslim visitors to the Temple Mount. This was not just a random event. Apparently, according to the JTA, it was called for by the Wakf and other Islamic organizations asked Muslims to gather at the Temple Mount because radical Jews were laying the cornerstone for the third Jewish Temple. I don’t know about you, but hearing ‘radical Jew’ doesn’t really strike fear into my heart. Every now and again one of us fly off the handle, but for the most part the two words don’t really belong in the same sentence (unless you’re talking about a Jewish skateboarder from the 90s). Moreover, I really think that if the cornerstone were being laid it would be difficult for Jews to keep that a secret… unless Mossad was doing it. Otherwise, that’s too big an event to keep to yourself.

This article did make me think of the Messianic era, when it’s finally ushered in and Mashiach makes himself known and does all of his messianic work. I imagine then that things will be quite interesting and quite disruptive for just about everyone (“Earth and all its inhabitants dissolve” (Psalms 75:4 JPS)). In the end though, the world will be a peaceful place as “Nation shall not take up Sword against nation; They shall never again know war.” (Isaiah 2:4 JPS)

At that time the world will live in peace. Unlike a couple of other religions I know of, this era does not mean the entire world will be homogenous in its religious practice. There will be Jews and non-Jews, just like before, except that there will be peace and all people will be united in the belief and worship of the One G~d. Jews, Muslims, and Christians will finally peacefully coexist.

How productive will the Nations be when we can all work together? How much good will be done when there is no longer a budget for armies and navies? We all know the destructive power of an aircraft carrier, but what good will it do for the world? What will be the medical advances? What will the poorest and most desperate parts of the world look like after a year?

This story covered by the JTA is ,sadly, not uncommon. I look forward to the day when all peoples can walk peaceably side-by-side at the Temple Mount.

Night at the Ghetto Carnival

24 02 2010

A couple of weekends ago there was a small carnival at the Metro Center Mall. Not being one to usually attend these functions, we decided to take the kids and show them a good time. We rode rides, played games, and I was even able to introduce them to elephant ears. Here’s a short video of that night.

Neo-Nazi march blocked in Dresden

14 02 2010

Here’s a really cool article from the JTA about 10,000 protestors stopping a neo-nazi march in Germany’s eastern town of Dresden. You can read the full article here.

While most of the protestors were peaceful and simply formed a human chain to prevent the neo-nazis from moving forward some became violent, physically blocking their progress by burning trash bins and destroying the vehicles they had traveled in. This is my favorite part of the article,

Ultimately, police informed the right-wing marchers that authorities could not guarantee their safety, and urged them to call off the march.

I love reading these types of things and am especially thrilled by this because it happened in Germany. It’s poetic that the nation that caused the destruction of 6 million Jews has stopped what Lena Roth calls “the biggest neo-Nazi march in Europe.”

What’s even more amazing about this is that it all happened on the 65th anniversary of Dresden’s bombing, killing an estimated 25,000 civilians. At a time when it would be so easy to let the gears of war turn, 10,000 people turned the gears of peace.

Hey, Jew!

29 01 2010

Before I start, I want to be clear that this post is not about an anti-semitic incident that happened to me. Rather it’s a tale expressing my amazement at the level of ignorance and insensitivity people still display towards Jews, and the manner in which I intend to deal with it when I cross its path.

If you know me you know where I work, and if you don’t know me you can figure it out pretty easily, but for the sake of protecting the innocent I’m not going to say it outright here. At my current job I have had two separate incidents with someone speaking ignorantly towards me. Today was my second incident. The really great thing about this one is my cube-mate is also Jewish (it’s really great—this has never happened before), so I had a little support.

A fellow co-worker poked me with a stick from my side and said, “Hey, Jew.” When confronted with a semi-aggressive “What?!” he plead ignorance and pleaded, “I said ‘you.’”. Not buying it I proceeded to tell him how inappropriate, rude, and disrespectful it was. When I mentioned there was a history to the context of being called “Jew” he said he didn’t know it. So, I explained briefly a little thing called the Holocaust, yellow stars, and Juden.

While he still tried to play it off as a goofy bastard, I challenged him to approach a black co-worker and address him in a similar, relevant manner, at which he promptly declined.

I was mildly pissed off by this and after the offender left my fellow Jew turned and told me that if I had not said anything he would have. At which point we discussed it for a couple of minutes.

As I think about this in hindsight I am a bit more pissed off about it than initially. There will be ignoramuses, schmucks, and people who make honest mistakes, but in spite of this, I do not know why people will speak to a Jewish person in a racial manner that they would not address a black person. Therefore, it is my new agenda when confronting this issue I will issue the challenge. If given the opportunity, I will enlist the help of black people around me to cooperate with my challenge to the offender, making himself available at a moment’s notice, so that a point may be strongly impressed upon the person to never repeat the mistake again.

This is something that I will no longer deal with wearing a smile and believing in the innate goodness of people. I will address the issue aggressively with a determined goal of preventing it from happening to another from this person, or from another who witnesses the event.

A rant on love

24 01 2010

In April this woman and I will have been married 9 years. We’ve been together for 11 and they’ve all been great, not easy, but great just because we’ve had them together.

We got out on a date last night thanks to a friend who kindly stayed with our boys. She wanted to see a movie, and I kind of did too, but there was nothing playing at the time we went out, at least at a decent hour. I’m very glad that we didn’t see a movie because then we would not have been able to spend time together.

We sat at Chili’s for about an hour, ate some terrible food, shared a decent margarita, and talked. It was great, so great that it made me think of writing this.

In the soon to be 9 years we’ve been married, we’ve been through so much. These things are in no specific order.

  • We’ve been married twice
  • We’ve had three wonderful boys
  • We’re currently surviving cancer
  • We’ve moved 6 times
  • We bought our first house February 2009 after the birth of our 3rd son
  • She has helped me with the loss of my mom
  • We helped a friend during the death of her 2-month old daughter, Eliana
  • We’ve laughed, loved, fought, loved, and laughed again
  • We’ve felt the excitement of birth, and felt the loss of miscarriage
  • We’ve been insanely happy with something each of our boys did as a baby
  • We’ve been insane as we’ve worked through challenging times
  • We’ve always come back to each other because there was no where else to go

What a gal she is, my Bithia. I sure do love her.

A Helping Hand for Haiti

Op-Ed Contributors – A Helping Hand for Haiti – NYTimes.com

Take a moment to read the article above written by former President GW Bush and former President Bill Clinton. They have opened a charity organization, the Clinton Bush Haiti Fund. Here’s the reason you should donate through these men; 100% of your donation goes to Haiti. 100%. Red Cross, while a good organization, covers its costs with your donations and your entire donation does not make it to your intended location. Considering the situation of Haiti, I want all of my donation to be available to help the Haitians.

This is a photo I took using my iPhone and an app called Pano. I love how the sky and clouds look. Panographic photography really does an amazing job of making you feel like you’re there. Look at how even the perspective of distance is captured. Cool stuff.

Iranian soccer federation mistakenly greets Israel

5 01 2010

So I read this today and it killed me. This is probably the funniest thing I’ve read about Iran in a long time. Not that Iran is a funny topic, mind you, it’s just that I read this article and I hear so many funny things.

Basically, Israel was mistakenly not omitted from the New Year greeting cards. I can see it now… “Dear Zionist entity, the Republic of Iran wishes you a happy and healthy 2010.”

Yeah, I laughed out loud about this one. Read the article and tell me if you think it’s as funny as I do.
